Google AI Overviews are large, conversational answer boxes that synthesize information from across the web and appear at the top of SERPs, often eclipsing the classic “3‑pack” and organic listings for brand queries.
DemandSphere data shows the feature now covers 80% of branded searches, up from 26% on Sept 1, meaning most consumers will first see the AI panel instead of your Google Business Profile or website.
For local businesses this translates into fewer direct clicks, lower foot‑traffic and a potential dip in ad‑performance because the AI panel satisfies the query before users reach your listing.
A coffee shop that relied on “best coffee near me” map clicks must now ensure its menu, hours and reviews are fed into the AI via FAQ and Review schema; a salon should add service‑specific FAQs; a fitness studio can push class schedules; a pet groomer can list accepted breeds and pricing.
The rollout is in full production as of Oct 2024, but Google will continue to refine the content sources. Track the “AI Overview” impression metric in Search Console and watch for any drop in map‑pack CTR over the next 4‑6 weeks.
Within 7 days add FAQ schema (up to 10 questions) and enable the “FAQ” feed in Google Search Console for each location page; also claim the “Q&A” section in your Google Business Profile and seed it with the same answers to force the AI overview to pull your own content.
