Google Is Auto-Updating GBP Business Descriptions Using AI — Owners Can Override
Google confirmed it is using AI to rewrite or supplement Google Business Profile descriptions when the owner's description is thin, outdated, or missing. Owners can edit or revert the AI-generated text.
Multiple business owners have reported seeing their GBP descriptions change without their input. Google confirmed this is intentional: when a business description is fewer than 100 characters, more than 12 months old, or scores low on "helpfulness" signals, Google's AI now generates a supplemental or replacement description using review content, website text, and category data.
The AI-generated descriptions are generally accurate but can miss brand voice, unique selling points, or specific service nuances. One coffee shop owner in Austin found her description had been rewritten to emphasise "quick service" (based on review keywords) when her actual brand positioning is "slow, specialty coffee experience" — the opposite message.
Owners retain full control: log in to GBP → Edit Profile → Business Description, and you can overwrite the AI text with your own. Google will not override an owner-edited description that meets the minimum quality bar (100+ characters, published within 12 months).
Log into your GBP right now and check your business description. If it looks different from what you wrote, rewrite it. Aim for 200–300 characters that include your top 2 services, your neighbourhood, and one unique differentiator. Save it — this prevents Google from overwriting it again.
