Google I/O Introduces Universal Cart & Agentic Booking for Local Businesses
Google I/O unveiled Universal Cart and Agentic Booking — features letting consumers complete transactions and bookings directly in Google Search without visiting your website. Local businesses must now ensure their Google listings are complete and accurate to appear in these new AI-driven surfaces.
Google I/O 2026 showcased Universal Cart and Agentic Booking as central to Google's next evolution in search. Universal Cart lets users add products and services to a persistent cart across all Google surfaces — Search, Maps, and Shopping — while Agentic Booking pulls real-time pricing and availability from business listings to let customers book appointments without leaving Google. Both features were live-demoed completing full transactions for restaurants, salons, and fitness studios during the keynote.
The mechanics rely on structured data from Google Business Profiles and Google's merchant feeds. Businesses with complete, accurate GBP listings — including services, pricing, real-time availability, and booking links — will be eligible for inclusion. Google confirmed that Agentic Booking will initially prioritise businesses using integrated scheduling tools such as Booksy, Vagaro, Mindbody, and Square Appointments. The Universal Cart feature is rolling out in the US first, with UK and Australia to follow in Q3 2026.
For coffee shops, salons, pet groomers, and fitness studios, this fundamentally changes the discovery funnel. A customer searching "hair salon near me Saturday 2pm" may see your availability, price, and a one-tap booking button — all without visiting your website. Businesses without complete GBP listings or booking integrations will be invisible in this new surface. Early beta testers in the salon category reported a 35% increase in new bookings within the first two weeks of being included in Agentic Booking results.
Audit your GBP this week: ensure all services have prices listed, your booking link is active and connected to a supported platform (Booksy, Vagaro, Mindbody, Square). Add your availability hours to the services section. This is the single highest-ROI GBP action you can take right now — businesses with complete listings will be eligible for Agentic Booking from day one of the broader rollout.
