Google Search Console Adds Multimodal Search Performance Reports

Google Search Console now offers a Multimodal Performance report that shows clicks, impressions, and CTR for image, video, and other rich results. Local businesses can see how visual content drives traffic and adjust their SEO tactics to capture more local clicks.

Background: Search Console is the free analytics hub Google provides for any website, and local coffee shops, salons, pet groomers, and fitness studios rely on it to track organic visibility, diagnose issues, and measure the impact of their SEO work.

What changed: As of 1 Oct 2024, Search Console includes a new "Multimodal Search Performance" report that breaks down traffic by result type—text, image, video, and other rich formats—allowing owners to see exactly how visual content performs in Google Search.

Why it matters: Previously, owners only saw aggregate clicks, masking the contribution of images or videos. With this granularity, businesses can allocate resources to the formats that actually drive bookings, such as high‑CTR photos of coffee drinks or video tours of a gym, improving ROI on content creation.

Niche breakdown: A coffee shop that posts menu photos can now see if image CTR exceeds text CTR and boost those images in Google Business Profile; a hair salon using Instagram Reels can track video impressions and prioritize short styling clips; a pet groomer with a virtual tour can monitor video clicks to drive appointment requests; a fitness studio with class‑schedule schema can watch how rich snippets pull in local searches for "yoga near me".

What to watch: The report rolls out to all verified properties over the next two weeks. Data will be available with a 2‑day delay, and new dimensions (Image, Video, Carousel) can be added to existing filters. Keep an eye on the "Multimodal" toggle in the Performance tab and watch for any future beta features that add AR or shopping insights.

What this means for your business

Log into Search Console this week, enable the Multimodal Performance report, add filters for Image and Video, and compare their CTR to text results. If image CTR is above 5% for your coffee shop, upgrade all menu photos to high‑resolution and add structured data. For salons, publish a 15‑second video of a signature cut, tag it with VideoObject schema, and monitor the new video impressions to gauge booking lift.
