Instagram Tests Local Map Search — Business Profiles Now Appear in Location Explore
Instagram is testing a map-based "Explore Nearby" view where users browse businesses by location on a map. Your Instagram profile becomes a local discovery surface — with photos, hours, and a direct message button.
Instagram has been quietly testing a map-view inside the Explore tab for users in select US cities and parts of Australia. When activated, users see an interactive map of nearby businesses with Instagram presences — tapping a pin opens the business profile preview showing recent posts, follower count, and a "Message" button.
The feature pulls from Instagram business accounts that have a physical address set in their profile. Accounts with recent posts (within the last 7 days) and high local engagement appear more prominently on the map. Early testers report that accounts with consistent posting of location-tagged content rank significantly higher.
This is a significant shift: Instagram is positioning itself as a local discovery tool competing directly with Google Maps and Yelp. For businesses that have built a strong Instagram presence, this could drive organic walk-in traffic at zero additional cost.
Make sure your Instagram business profile has your full address, current hours, and phone number filled in. Start posting at least 3 times per week and always add a location tag to your posts. This costs nothing now and positions you for when the map feature rolls out broadly.
