Meta Enables Device‑Side Conversion Counting – All Ads Now Auto‑Tracked

Meta switched on device‑side conversion counting on 12 Nov 2024, making sales reported directly from users’ devices. The change inflates reported conversions for local advertisers, altering ROAS calculations and budget decisions.

The Meta Pixel has been the go‑to tool for local shops to measure online sales, foot‑traffic lifts and app installs from Facebook and Instagram ads. Small businesses rely on it to prove ROI and allocate budget across campaigns.

On 12 Nov 2024 Meta rolled out device‑side conversion counting as the default setting for all ad accounts. The browser now reports purchases directly from the user’s device, bypassing server‑side deduplication, and the change applies to any ad that uses the standard pixel code.

Because conversions are now counted on‑device, reported sales will rise by roughly 10‑15 % for most local advertisers, while the previous “view‑through” and “click‑through” gaps shrink. Budgets that were previously paused due to low ROAS may suddenly look profitable, prompting overspend if not re‑calibrated.

A coffee shop that runs Instagram story ads to drive in‑store visits will see its reported purchase count jump, allowing it to justify a higher daily spend. A hair salon using Facebook lead ads will notice more booked appointments attributed to the campaign, while a pet groomer relying on catalog ads will see higher e‑commerce conversion numbers. A fitness studio promoting class sign‑ups will get a clearer picture of which creative drives the most memberships.

The rollout is live for all accounts, but Meta will continue A/B testing the attribution window for the next 30 days. Watch the “Conversions” column in Ads Manager for sudden spikes and compare against your offline sales logs. If the lift looks artificial, adjust the conversion window to 7‑day click + 1‑day view to normalize data.

What this means for your business

Today, open Ads Manager, go to Settings → Attribution, and switch the default conversion window to ‘7‑day click, 1‑day view’. Then add the new device‑side pixel event “Purchase (device)” to your existing pixel and pause any budget that now shows ROAS > 5 until you verify the numbers against your POS.
