Google asks for Change of Address requests for every variant of an old domain
Search Engine Journal (June 18, 2026) reports Google updated its site migration guidance to cover the Search Console Change of Address tool when moving to a new domain name. Owners should now submit requests for every variant of the old domain, including all subdomains and both the www and non-www versions.
This applies even to variants the site doesn't actively use, and owners should verify all of these variants in Search Console before submitting.
The guidance doesn't explain the requirement; the changelog says domain migrations work best when all variants of a site are migrated properly.
If you plan to move to a new domain, verify every old variant (www, non-www, subdomains) in Search Console first.
