Grok Build (xAI): Pricing, Features and Setup

November 7, 2026·Nataliia Rumiantsewa· 9 min read All posts
Grok Build is xAI's coding agent. It launched on 25 May 2026 as an early beta in the terminal for SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscribers, and xAI's 19 August 2026 post says it is now available on every plan, on the web and on mobile. xAI's API lists the grok-build-0.1 model at $1.00 per million input tokens and $2.00 per million output tokens. Subscription prices could not be confirmed, because x.ai's pricing page returned an error.
Prices and features checked on 7 November 2026.
This guide is for owners and marketers of local businesses who want to know what Grok Build is and whether it is worth trying. Where xAI's pages could not be opened, the article says so and leaves the number out.

What Does Grok Build Cost?

The honest answer is that subscription prices for Grok Build could not be confirmed from xAI for this guide. The x.ai pricing page and the x.ai/build page returned an HTTP 403 error when opened on 7 November 2026, and xAI's docs paths tried returned 404. Plan prices seen in press coverage are therefore left out.

Is Grok Build Still in Beta?

xAI's launch post (25 May 2026) calls it an early beta. The 19 August post does not call it beta now and says the new features "ship to everyone today". The two xAI posts also disagree on timing: the August post says Grok Build launched "in July" as an early beta limited to SuperGrok Heavy, while the launch post is dated 25 May and lists SuperGrok and X Premium Plus. Press coverage of the beta also differs from these posts, so this guide follows xAI's own pages and notes the conflict rather than picking a date.

What Is Grok Build and How Does It Work?

xAI describes it as "a new coding agent that runs right from your terminal," built for professional software engineering and complex coding work. Listed features:
  • Plan mode, where you approve, comment on or rewrite a plan before execution.
  • Support for existing setups: AGENTS.md, plugins, hooks, skills and MCP servers.
  • Parallel subagents, which can run in their own git worktrees.
  • Headless mode with -p for scripts.
  • A /goal command (introduced 22 June 2026) for long-running autonomous tasks.
  • A plugin marketplace (announced 11 June 2026), using commands such as grok plugin install.
If MCP is unfamiliar, this explainer covers it.

How Do You Set Up Grok Build?

xAI's posts give a single install command for the terminal: curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bash. Then you sign in with your account. The pages do not name supported operating systems. The August post adds building on the web, iOS and Android, so a terminal is not the only route.
For a non-technical owner, the terminal is the hurdle. If that is a barrier, a visual editor such as Cursor may be easier.

What Can a Small Business Use It For?

These are possibilities, not results, based on what xAI lists the tool can do:
  • Editing a landing page: opening hours, offers, phone numbers.
  • Writing a script that summarizes a sales or booking export.
  • Cleaning up a client spreadsheet.
  • Running a checklist over a website for missing titles or broken links.
All of these need a person to check the output. For where this fits in a wider plan, see the guide to automating a local business with AI.

What Would It Cost? A Worked Example

This is an assumption using only published API rates. Assume a gym owner runs one session with 150,000 input tokens and 30,000 output tokens on grok-build-0.1, with a prompt under 200k tokens and no caching.
LineCalculationCost
Input0.15 million tokens at $1.00$0.15
Output0.03 million tokens at $2.00$0.06
Total$0.21
The token counts are invented for the example, and real sessions vary. A subscription route would follow the plan price, which was not confirmed. Do not budget from this example.

What Are the Risks and Limits?

  • Beta wording. xAI called it an early beta at launch and has not repeated that label in the August post.
  • Unconfirmed terms. Plan prices, usage limits and data-training terms could not be opened on x.ai for this guide. Read xAI's terms before sending customer data.
  • Autonomy. /goal is described as long-running autonomous execution. That raises the importance of reviewing changes.
  • Review. Plan mode lets you approve a plan before execution; the owner remains responsible for checking results.
