How Do HeyGen Credits Work?

HeyGen's FAQ says credits are "HeyGen's single currency for video and asset creation". The cost of a video "can vary based on which AI model is used, video duration, and the complexity of the generation". The page gives no credits-per-minute figure, so no per-video price is stated here.
Rollover rules on the pricing page: Creator credits roll over one month, Pro credits roll over, and for annual subscribers credits accumulate until renewal. Business adds top-up credits, one-time credit packs and auto-reload.
The Free plan has no stated credit amount. Its card says "3 videos a month, watermarked", and the FAQ says no credit card is required. It also includes limited trial access to premium features such as Avatar IV, Video Agent and lip-sync translation.

What Is HeyGen and How Does It Work?

HeyGen is an AI video platform where a digital avatar reads your script. Its pricing page lists stock avatars, custom video avatars built from your own footage, photo avatars and translation into other languages. You type or paste a script, choose an avatar and voice, and generate a video.
A "Digital Twin" is the term HeyGen uses for a video avatar of a real person. Setting one up requires a consent video. For the voice side of AI, including phone-style assistants, see the ElevenLabs voice AI guide.

What Can a Small Business Use HeyGen For?

These are possibilities, not results. The pricing page names video, avatars and translation. For a local business, that could include:
  • A 30-second welcome video for a new-client page at a salon.
  • A "how a first class works" explainer for a fitness studio.
  • A grooming-care tips clip repeated in several languages for a multilingual neighbourhood.
  • A holiday opening-hours announcement for social channels.
  • A short product explainer for a café's beans or merchandise.
Video works in a wider marketing mix; see the Facebook video ads guide and the AI automation overview. An avatar message can feel impersonal for a business that sells on personal service, so many owners will want to start with a clip of themselves. A text-only AI route is described in ChatGPT for small business marketing.

What Would It Cost? A Worked Example

This is an assumption using only published prices. A yoga studio wants a set of short videos for a spring launch and then stops.
LineAssumptionCost
Free planTest 3 watermarked videos$0
Creator, monthlyTwo months at $29$58
Creator, annual12 months at $24$288
BusinessOne month at $149 if longer videos or more avatars are needed$149
Two months of Creator is $58. How many videos 600 credits make depends on model, length and complexity, and the page gives no rate, so the number of videos is not stated. Credits roll over only one month on Creator, so a stock of unused credits does not build up indefinitely on a monthly plan.

What Are the Rules and Risks?

From HeyGen's terms of service:
  • Ownership on paid plans. "As between HeyGen and you, you own all rights in your User Input or User Output", and output may be used for commercial purposes.
  • Free plan. You own your input but receive "a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license" to your output. Free output "may not be sold, sublicensed, redistributed, monetized". That wording limits what a business can do with Free videos, so check the terms before posting one publicly.
  • Likeness and voice. The terms prohibit "reproducing their likeness or voice, without the required permission". They also say "ownership of a recording alone does not establish permission to clone or use a person's voice."
  • Consent video. HeyGen's help centre says a consent video under 30 seconds is required for every video-based Digital Twin, recorded by the person featured, at the same time as the avatar footage.
  • Impersonation. Impersonating somebody else is prohibited.
  • Training. The terms grant HeyGen a licence to use your content "to train or otherwise improve or modify our artificial intelligence and machine learning models". Do not upload private footage you would not want used that way.
The pages opened do not include a statement on advertising disclosure for AI-generated people. Check local advertising rules before running an avatar as a "spokesperson".

How Does HeyGen Compare With Other AI Video Tools?

Only facts confirmed on each vendor's own page on 7 November 2026 are shown. "Not confirmed" means the page did not open or did not state it.

Canva's pricing page returned a 403 error. The Synthesia page text was long and partly garbled, so only the clear rows are used. Third-party price comparisons were used only as leads and are not cited. The cost example is an assumption.
