NotebookLM Pricing 2026: Free vs Plus vs Pro

November 7, 2026·Nataliia Rumiantsewa· 10 min read All posts
NotebookLM is free: the Standard plan allows 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook. Paid access comes through Google AI plans. Plus allows 200 notebooks and 100 sources, Pro (Google AI Pro, $19.99 a month) allows 500 notebooks and 300 sources, and Ultra allows up to 600 sources. Since 16 July 2026 Google calls the product Gemini Notebook, but search results and many guides still say NotebookLM.
Prices and features checked on 7 November 2026.
This guide is for owners and marketers of cafés, salons, grooming studios and gyms who want to turn their own documents into summaries and briefings. It covers the rename, plan limits, prices, privacy and whether paying makes sense. Numbers come from Google's own pages, listed in Sources.

Is NotebookLM Now Called Gemini Notebook?

Yes. On 16 July 2026 Google's blog post by Josh Woodward said: "We're renaming NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook." Google calls it "the same standalone product, now doing more across the Google ecosystem". Its help pages and plans page now use the new name only, and some still show the notebooklm.google address.
The blog post does not address pricing or the free plan. Google's plans help page still lists a free Standard plan, which is what this guide relies on. The article keeps the old name in its title because most searches still use it.
The rename also brought code execution: "Gemini Notebook to write and execute code natively", with a secure cloud computer for each notebook. Google said it was available for Google AI Ultra and Workspace business customers on launch, and rolling out to Pro on the web.

How Much Does NotebookLM Cost?

Google's plans help page lists limits by plan. It gives no price on that page, so prices below come from Google's AI plans page.

The help page lists watermark removal on Pro and Ultra, with a visible watermark still applied in India, South Korea and Vietnam. Google AI Pro is free for one year for eligible students with verification. The Plus price was not shown on the plans page text and Google pages disagree, so it is left out.
100 notebooks

Google's free Standard plan allows 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources in each one

Pro raises this to 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook.

What Are the Usage Limits?

Limits on chats, audio and video overviews are not given as numbers. Google's usage page describes them as "compute-based", depending on prompt complexity, the models and features used, and chat length. Plans are expressed as multiples: no plan has standard limits, AI Plus two times, AI Pro four times, and AI Ultra 5x or 20x AI Pro.
Quota refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. Google says limits can change. Your own usage and weekly limit show under Settings, then Usage, in the app.
Because no daily count is published, a plan comparison on "how many audio summaries" is not possible from official pages. The notebook and source counts are the hard numbers.

What Is Gemini Notebook and How Does It Work?

Google describes it as "an AI-powered research assistant designed to help you refine and organize your ideas". You add sources such as PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Google Slides. It answers questions grounded in those sources with inline citations, and can create study guides, briefings, audio overviews and mind maps.
Because answers come from the sources you add, it suits internal material better than open-ended writing. It can still make mistakes, and Google says to consult a qualified professional for medical, legal or financial advice.

What Can a Small Business Use It For?

These are possibilities, not results. Google's page describes briefings, summaries and questions on your own sources. For a local business, ideas include:
  • Turning a staff handbook and cancellation policy into a quick Q&A for new hires.
  • Loading menus, allergen sheets and supplier notes, then asking where an ingredient appears.
  • Summarising a stack of customer feedback exports or review text to prepare a team meeting.
  • Making a briefing from a studio's class descriptions and FAQs, to draft website copy afterwards.
  • Collecting competitor web pages as sources and asking what each says about pricing.
Any customer-facing answer still needs a human check. For general AI assistants and prompts, see ChatGPT for small business marketing and ChatGPT prompts for local business marketing. For connecting AI to your tools, read what MCP is.

What Would It Cost? A Worked Example

This is an assumption using only published prices. A salon owner with a policy folder wants a question-and-answer notebook for staff training.
LineAssumptionCost
Standard planOne notebook with a few documents$0
Google AI Pro, monthlyTwo months at $19.99 if limits are hit$39.98
Google AI Pro, annual12 months$199.99
A small business is unlikely to approach 100 notebooks or 50 sources. The reason to pay is more likely higher usage limits, since limits are a multiple of the standard amount: four times on AI Pro. Google AI Pro also bundles other Google AI features, whose details were not opened in full.

What Are the Rules and Risks?

From Google's Gemini Notebook help pages:
  • Training. "Your data is protected, and is not used to train Gemini Notebook unless you provide feedback." Sending feedback lets Google review the full context of that interaction.
  • Work and school accounts. For Workspace and Workspace for Education, uploads, queries and responses "will not be reviewed by human reviewers".
  • Ownership. The help page says Google will not claim ownership of content you generate. It asks you to respect copyright and not share copyrighted material without the necessary rights.
  • Sharing. Notebooks are private by default (lock icon); a globe icon means shared publicly. Check before sharing a notebook that contains staff or customer data.
  • Age and region. Users must verify their age in the Google Account, and availability depends on country.
  • Accuracy. It can make mistakes, so check citations against the source file.
  • Commercial terms. The pages opened do not state commercial-use rules for outputs beyond the ownership line, and they do not cover Gemini app chat storage settings, so check them before processing customer data.

How Does It Compare With Other AI Assistants?
